Verses containing the English word “hell”

The word “hell” as found in the Bible, comes from four different words. In the New Testament it is translated from “gehenna,” “hades,” and “tartaroo.” In the Old Testament, it is translated from “sheol.”

In the chart below, find all the Biblical references to “hell”, along with the associated Greek or Hebrew word, and associated characteristics of hell.

(Mat 5:22)  But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. gehenna fire

The Hebrew word “sheol” is frequently translated with words other than “hell” in English. Find all the uses of the word “sheol” below. (Including the ones shown above, repeated here)

The Greek word “hades” is one time translated with words other than “hell” in English. Note that the word translated “gehenna” always is translated as “hell” in English. The single case of “hades” not being translated “hell” is below:

(1Co 15:55)  O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? grave

Verses containing “Lake of fire”

The phrase “Lake of fire” is found five times in Revelation.

(Rev 19:20)  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
(Rev 20:10)  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
(Rev 20:14)  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
(Rev 20:15)  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
(Rev 21:8)  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

This verse does not seem to allude to anything relating to hell.

Verses containing the Greek word “Kaio”

These verses does not seem to allude to anything relating to hell. The only one that may be argued so is John 15:6. The last two cases relate to the lake of fire.

New Testament verses saying “for ever and ever”

These are all the cases where “for ever and ever” is used in the New Testament. This is a phrase that includes the Greek word “eis” followed by “aion aion.”
